NEWER SHADES OF GREEN OPENING TONIGHT*Friday!
|
Newer Shades of Green: Five Painters and Their Divergent Landscapes
The AESS 2010 conference features an art exhibition, Newer Shades of Green, curated expressly for this event and featuring five divergent representations of environmental art. The art exhibition will be held at Lewis & Clark College's Ronna and Eric Hoffman Gallery of Contemporary Art and curated by Tom Webb, Editor in Chief of The Bear Deluxe Magazine. "Ryan Pierce walks blithely through violent confrontation, nationalism, and diminishing bioregionalism. Linda Gass works through a prism of watery landscapes-represented by less than watery textiles. Kendra Larson creates emotional landscape narratives and is inspired by storytelling of film noir and literature of the woods. And while P.S. Greene is interested in staying true to the primal nature of nature itself, she brings a hint of Asia to her contemplations on Ponderosa pine. Jolyn fry finds a pulsing action behind even the most tranquil setting." a part of the curator's statement written by Tom Webb

Stock is a monthly public dinner event and presentation series, which funds small to medium-sized artist projects. Diners( Sorry folks dinner reservations are all filled up!) pay a modest $10 for a dinner of homemade soup and other local delicacies and the chance to take part in deciding which artist proposal will receive the evening's proceeds. In other words, the dinner's profits immediately become an artists grant, which is awarded according to the choice of the diners. Winning artists will present their completed work at the following Stock dinner.

Launch Pad Gallery presents FAMILY featuring the works of over 100 artists (including paintings by Jolyn Fry)
First FRIDAY
October 2nd
6pm til midnight

Free food + beer available to purchase.
We explore the theme of family. With our 8th bi-annual open-call non-juried group show, we have enthusiastically and apprehensively invited 117 artists to explore what family means to them. The theme is a complicated one. Everyone has issues with family- where we come from, who we are, who we want to become (and who we fear we will become) and where we each belong- all of these things are tied in a messy Gordian knot, laced together with a heavy braid of blood, sex, history, birth, death, adventure, childhood, friendship, loss and so much more.

Rag Quilt wins best of show in the Waste Not Competition!
|
My submission to the WASTE NOT art show won first place in the juried competition. The prize awarded was $1000.
The inspiration to create a quilt from paint rags came to me one as i stood over the trash can with an armload of saturated paint rags. Many of these cloths had originally lived out their lives as flannel diapers that i had sewn for my daughter. I just wasn't ready to let them go (not to mention my old socks from college, or my partner's previously favorite shirt). So I started saving, cutting, and piecing them together on the sewing machine. When I saw the poster for the waste not competition it gave me the final push I needed to invest the last few hours of sewing. Lou Ursitti created the stretcher for me from recycled wood purchased at the rebuilding center. Thank you so much Lou your skills and intuitive design. The actual event hosted an impressive amount of people and a smorgasbord of art. It was an honor to win the Best of Show.
Many thanks to SCRAP and DISJECTA!
